William Bentinck, Governor-General of the company from 1828, addresses the issue of whether to intervene in the issue of satis. There seems to be a misunderstanding by the English that satis are a religious act, but they were not. Satis were an imposed tradional view that women could not/should not live if she truly lost her love.
