About The Project

With this digital exhibit, I wanted to connect my current research of British India and women's rights. This projects is looking into the effects of the British Raj on women's rights and how they transformed Indian society as a whole through films made by director Deep Mehta. There seemed to be a connection to changing rights for women and LGBTQ+ which I limited in this project, due to the constrains of movies created by Mehta at time of site creation. There is also sections that include the legal documents mentioned or referenced in the movies, plus books which influenced the movie or vice versa for the viewers possible further reading on the subject. This site will be taking a deep dive into films made by Deepa Mehta, best known for her trilogy Fire (1996), Earth (1999), and Water (2005). The question then asked is, how did the Hindus people fight back against European influence on gender and politics?

Purpose

Using movies as a way to connect with a nonacademic audience, there is space and time for viewers to see how women's right being supported or limited shaped the formation of an independent India.
